Going back to my roots

In my first year of Graphic Design, it was my first time having letters class.
First time using a calligraphy brush and writing down the alphabets, and OHamburgefonstiv, to The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Having taught by Frank E Blokland, he was interested in the construction of Korean alphabets. Not knowing so much about it myself, I was given an opportunity to make basic research of Korean alphabet letter design, and make a simple presentation at Leiden.

Now going onto my final year for graduation, I have become very interested in Korean Graphic design world, plus Korean letters design itself. Having been studying on the forms and characteristics of Roman alphabets, and font designs, Korean letter design is something quite different to Roman alphabets. The most important element that distinguishes between the two languages is the 'Harmony' of the letters themselves.
The standard harmony of the letters works differently, therefore the construction and the rhythm of the letters are different.

I plan to go on an internship in Seoul this coming year until August, hopefully I get an opportunity to learn about this matter and going back to my roots.
Here are some slides I have used back in my first year.

email invitation. RICHE. Progress

Since we both pretty much liked the beams,
we decided to use one for each item.
So for the email invitation, we decided to use the first beam.
However, when the beams were going out of the spread,
we thought that the beams looked too technical, and we wanted some
elegant image. Since it was about Riche's continental breakfast.

The first image became our finalist.
You can check for the final invitation on my website.

Here are some sketches, by using Riche's font: Courier New.

RICHE Progress version 2

/ Since we were foiling the yellow parts,
there needed to be less overlapping lines,
so we did some erasing, and made the beams a little more dynamic.

So we have decided on two beams.
We tried printing them, and cutting them out in the right size.
We just liked them both.

Here are some files from Adobe illustrator.

The point was that the beams were going out of the page,
and whatever was leftover would be printed on the other side of the spread.

The bread is called Pain Riche, it's basically a baguette, Riche was the first restaurant to introduce this bread in Sweden.

That's why the Pain Riche is sort of like the field, and the eggs are the three suns.

For the physical menu card, and invitations, the yellow parts will be foiled in GOLD.

Progress RICHE, menu card.

Interning in Stockhol at the moment for Johan Hjerpe.
We were to design a breakfast menu card for a restaurant called RICHE.
Total of; Physical menu card, invitation, and an email invitation.

The idea was something to do with the eggs, since the breakfast contained a lot of different eggs. Johan came up with the idea of having beaming eggs, as if the sun was rising.

Here are some skteches and progress.

For the menu card.
After several sketches of beams, we came down to these two beams.

Contemplated over the background color, have it or not.

I don't have the photo by with me but Johan had a whole brief case with Pantone Colors.
By looking at those, we can know exactly what colors we will have printed.

Stockholm.

The Clueless much?

I can't believe I came to Stockholm for my internship.
I will be here from April till August.
I am super excited about the assignments that I will be getting from tomorrow.

점대점 / Point against Point / Punt tegen Punt

Went to Point against Point exhibition in Amsterdam today.
"Arti et Amicitiae"
Quite liked the poster / handout.
The exhibitions consists of 4 Korean artists.

"Composed of two or more opposing layers,
Even though ideas, forms and media in the layers are
sometimes contradictory, they can also correlate with each other
in a fascinating and unexpected way."

Couldn't take more pictures, cos my camera went out of battery..
